Irony: A literary device in which what happens is the opposite of what one would expect. Irony draws our attention to a contradiction.

Inference:Inference is the act or process of deriving logical conclusions from premises known or assumed to be true.

You make an inference when you use clues from the story to figure out something that the author doesn't tell you.
