WHY THEY CAME?

  • Irish came because of potato famine
  • Germans came in hopes of democracy

WHERE THEY SETTLED

  • The Irish swarmed into larger seaboard cities particularly Boston, Massachusetts and New York, which became the largest Irish city in the world
  • The Germans migrated to the mid-west and came in more educated and wealthier than the Irish
  • Ancient order of Hibernians .

JOBS

  • Low-skill occupations for the Irish
  • Barely literate "biddies" (Bridgets) kitchen maids
  • Broad shoulders "patties" (Patricks) picked and shoveled railroads
  • Germans were farmers

POLITICAL LIFE

  • Began to take control of powerful city machines
  • Americans cultivated Irish vote
  • Germans also voted but didn't contribute as much as Irish
