Induced pluripotent stem cells.
WHAT IS IT
- A stem cell that can be generated from adult cells
- 4 adult cells Oct3/4, Sox2, Klf4, c-Myc
- Re programs adult cells
WHAT IS IT NOT
- They don't eliminate the need to use embryos in stem cell research
- Cannot lead to human cloning
APPLICATIONS
- Hepatology = branch of medicine that incorporates the study of gallbladder, biliary tree, and pancreas
- Cell based therapies
- Treat human liver disease
CONCERNS
- "Old ethical concerns" meaning that it produces human germ cells
- Can cause cancer
