PRESENTATION OUTLINE
In this case:
A type of learning in which a behavior (chewing obnoxiously) is diminished when followed by negative reinforcement (taking chips).
Negative reinforcement: taking her chips when she chewed obnoxiously.
Positive reinforcement: rubbing her on the shoulder when she chewed quietly.
The procedure included turning on a movie and every time my friend chewed loudly I would take her chips to try and get her to stop. When she started to chew quietly, I rubbed her on the shoulder for encouragement.
TIME IT TOOK FRIEND TO STOP CHEWING OBNOXIOUSLY
Overtime, my friend found that she needed to chew quietly in order to keep the people around her happy.
Overall, it was hard for my friend to realize what was going on at first. She kept chewing as she normally does until she realized that she was not being positively reinforced by her actions. With operant conditioning we're able to teach her to stop chewing loudly and start chewing quietly .
