Hyperbole

  • " I thank whatever gods may be"
  • it relates to the poem because he is thankful to be alive.

End Rhyme

  • it helps to make the rhyme for the poem 
  • "pole,soul"
  • "be,me"
  • "gate,fate"

Personification

  • personification helps the poem by adding "juice" to the poem.
  • "out of the night that covers me"

Alliteration

  • alliteration helps the meaning of the poem because it makes it sound better
  • "bloody, unbowed"

  • repletion adds to the poem because it helps add emphasis on that word. 
  • "pole, pole"

stanza 1

  • the author is thanking the gods for his life.
  • such as going to church and "praying."

stanza 2

  • the authors life went down the wrong road and took a turn for the worst.
  • like when a family member goes to "jail."

stanza 3

  • the authors head is trying to scare him,but he is unafraid.
  • when you felt scared but you were "strong." 

stanza 4

  • Now the author is in control of his life and nothing can stop him.
  • like the time when you felt "unstoppable."

metaphorical meaning

  • even through hard times the author still gets the through it.
  • such as a "death in the family."
