Westward Expansion over time

THE COTTON GIN

Behind is a cotton gin

The cotton gin was a machine that helped the processing of cotton move faster. This machine took the seeds out of cotton fibers with a spiked cylinder. It was invented in 1793 by a man named Eli Whitney.

The cotton gin helped speed up westward expansion because it was a major cash crop in the United States. People wanted to move westward due to the cotton gin because there were many potential cotton producing areas in the west, and the cotton gin would help them make money from cotton.

This invention improved life because it helped people obtain more cotton a day than the regular amount. Before the cotton gin was invented the average laborer could only clean about one pound of cotton by hand, but after the invention was made laborers could process fifty times more cotton. This invention also helped improve life because it helped people process more cotton, which could be used for objects they need. The cotton gin also helped make cotton the greatest source of wealth for the United States.

THE TELEGRAPH

The telegraph was invented by Samuel F.B. Morse's, and it was a machine that sent messages by using electrical signals. This machine sent the signals over a wire.

The telegraph helped speed up westward expansion because it helped people communicate over a large distance. This helped people feel connected and safe out west with a telegraph because they could still be connected and communicate quicker than the traditional methods.

The telegraph improved life because it allowed people to feel connected and communicate to others a long distance away.
This invention made them feel connected because the telegraph allowed people to communicate over long distances a lot faster than the old way of communication.

THE RAILROAD

Behind is an example of a railroad

The railroad was a new way of land travel across the United States. It was consisted of a track and a rail car, and the car could be steam powered or pulled by horses.

This invention helped speed up westward expansion because people could ride the cars wherever a track was placed, and it was faster than horse and a lot more efficient. The railroad track could also be placed almost anywhere, and that meant people could finally move west. The railroad also allowed people to explore more of the country and move westward with the best way of travel at the time.

The railroad improved life because it was the most efficient means of land travel. The railroad was the most efficient means of land travel because it allowed people to travel all over the country, and it was now the fastest form of land transportation.

THE STEAMBOAT

Behind is an 1800's steamboat

The steam boat is a boat powered by a steam engine, and the steam was created to power the engine by boiling water. The steam engine then made a big paddles push through the water in a circular motion, and that is how the steam boat worked.

The steam boat helped speed up westward expansion because this boat allowed people to now travel upstream and downstream in any river big enough to hold the boat. This meant people could now move westward on water with this new form of water travel.

The steamboat helped to improve life because it allowed people to travel faster on water, and it allowed people to travel up and down stream. It could travel faster because it was one of the first boats with an engine, and it could travel up and down stream because it was more powerful than a canoe or a paddle boat.
