What is qualitative data?

  • Subjective experience
  • words/images
  • information gathered from open-ended questions
  • narrative/storied/first person accounts
  • Is a rigorous method
  • Smaller "n"

Qualitative research

  • Uses an inductive approach
  • It's goal is to provide depth
  • The setting is natural
  • The sample is purposeful
  • It uses specific methods
  • The data analysis is interpretive (the researcher is the lens)
  • Seeks to explore the "how" and "why" questions

What are the products of qualitative research

  • Recurrent themes or hypotheses
  • As a way to generate survey items
  • Taxonomy/definition of terms
  • Generating frameworks or theories
