What is Twitter

  • Messaging service
  • 140 Character Limit
  • Messages are Public
  • Messages are opt-in
  • Powerful platform that is highly useful
Messaging Service - similar to what people use already

140 characters - about as long as a headline: EASY TO WRITE AND READ

Public - readily meet new people on twitter

Opt-in - people choose to get a stream of other messages, IF you want to be heard, need to be interesting

Multiple platform and device, fits workflow

Friendliness, highly useful for a slew of personal and professional needs.

News: Breaking news, World's real time newspaper, Really good tool for sharing common experiences like conferences.

Commentary - What people care about and what they have expertise in

Business - Key business channel for companies to engage directly with customers, partners, and other constituents

Ambient Intimacy - Provides lightweight connection, know what they are doing without having to respond

Mind - See what individuals are thinking about, and what groups are focusing on

Game changer for Eduactors

Helps "Steal" Ideas from Smart Folks
PLN - who has the time to find all the good ideas for education. We are in SILOS, twitter allows educators a peak outside of the silo and access to people who are creative and thoughtful. USE IT>

Twitter

Like trying to drink from a fire hose
Image: File:US Navy 031018-N-8295E-266 Damage Control men spray fire hose's off the hanger deck during a damage control demonstration held for embarked guests aboard USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76).jpg Public Domain

Useful metaphor especially for new users.

Do not have to read every tweet, first lesson, sip instead of gulp and use hash tags to refine the hose to a faucet of tweets.

Hashtags

  • #
  • Categorize messages in Twitter
  • Reduce firehouse to trickle
Hashtags are a way to categorize messages in Twitter.

Easy to get overwhelmed with the sheer volume of messages.

Hashtags allow the user to control the flow and specify the type of messages they will look at.

Makes the unmanageable manageable.

Anatomy of a tweet

@ = SPECIFIC PERSON
Basic Tweet:

My name and twitter handle

@ = a specific person, this is how to talk to a specific person in twitter, use their handle. Also to follow someone, may find them with their twitter handle.

ANATOMY OF A TWEET

Here is where the magic happens, 140 characters to make it happen. You must fit the text, links, hashtags, and @'s all within the 140 limit.

Untitled Slide

Add hashtags for your tweet to have relevance with certain demographics or topics within twitter. Here the tweet will show up in the ncce2014 hashtag for people following the news from the ncce conference.

This tweet will also show up in the @techsavvyteach stream.

Untitled Slide

Links are very helpful. For an educator looking for resources, links will direct you to blog posts, websites, web 2.0 tools, etc, that might be helpful in the future.

Be sure to use a url shortener such at tinyurl or bitly

Joining twitter

  • Think about Handle
  • Profile is important
  • Find people to follow
  • @techsavvyteach / @mikegusto
  • @coolcatteacher / @NMHS_Principal
Joining is free.

Keep handle as short as possible, it counts against 140 characters if anyone mentions you.

Profile needs to be engaging to get people to follow you.

Find people to follow, colleagues, people you know, famous people in your field.

BIO 160 CHARACTERS

WHY WOULD SOMEONE FOLLOW YOU
Be sure to fill out your bio, twitter users are reluctant to follow other users who haven't bothered to fill out their bios. Good indication of a spammer or a newbie. Find a photo or avatar and give twitter users an idea of what you are all about in the 160 character bio.

twitter terms

  • Favorite - allows you to come back to a tweet
  • RT - Re-Tweet a tweet you like to your followers
  • MT - Modified Tweet, modify an existing tweet
There is a lot of jargon in twitter. Here are some terms that show up often.

Favorite a tweet to come back to it later on, or to simple tell the user that you agree with their tweet.

RT is a powerful tool to share someone else tweet with your followers. BEWARE to not RT too often, modify the tweet and give the user credit or use via in your tweet instead of RT.

MT - modifying an existing tweet.

Learn by watching

  • Tweetchat
  • Global Education Chats
  • #edchat
  • #edtechchat
  • #sschat
Tweetchat is a way to monitor hashtags without being on twitter.

Global education chats, some are specific times and dates, others all the time. Follow the hashtags to watch and learn what influential people are saying.

Any google search will show the education chats and when they are.

Rules to tweet by

  • Be Helpful
  • Be Nice
  • Don't use Sarcasm
  • Don't be Political
  • Be Positive
Obviously we have free speech, but twitter tends to be a positive place, especially for educators. If you want to build your PLN, be positive and not political.
