Intro to San Jiao

Triple Burner, Triple Energizer, Triple heater, Jade Sea, Water Passageway

Of all the channels the San Jiao is the most mysterious. Adding to the mysterious nature of the San Jiao are the many names attributed to it including; The Triple Heater, The Triple Burner, The Water Passageway, The Jade Sea, The Bowel of Center Clearness & The Qi of Triple Human Origin.

The source of the debate & mystery over the San Jiao is its location & form. Since the rest of the channels in Chinese medicine were easily relatable to organ systems the TB was left as the odd meridian out.

In fact the debate over the San Jiao started thousands of years ago and its paired organ the Pericardium was included in the discussion. This debate began before the Nei Jing, that included 12 meridians & associated organs the Nan Jing only recognized

"The triple burner is the qi of human triple origin" meaning that the triple burner contains the ancestral qi in the upper burner, constructive qi in the middle burner and defensive qi in the lower burner. Master Hua's Classic of Central Viscera

The San Jiao "is dubbed the bowel of center clearness, solely managing the qi of the five viscera & six bowels, the constructive & defensive, the channels & connecting vessels, interior & exterior, left & right, above & below.

When the triple burner is free, interior & exterior, left & right, & above & below are all free. Nothing is more important than the triple burner in (promoting) circulation around the body & irrigating the form" Master Hua's Classic of Central Viscera

It has been proposed that the San Jiao was really the stages of digestion, the digestive fluids themselves, the connection between organs as well as many other theories. This class proposes that the San Jiao is synonymous with the fascial system.

"harmonizing the interior & regulating the exterior, nurturing the left & nourishing the right, conducting above & diffusing below." Master Hua's Classic of Central Viscera

"(The triple burner) governs communication between yin & yang & the balancing of vacuity & repletion." Master Hua's Classic of Central Viscera

Blockages in the TB often result in a cutting off of communication between two parts of the body. for example excess heat trapped in the middle burner may create a blockage between above & below, with a failure of qi below to ascend & the qi above to descend - Master Hua's Classic of Central Viscera

"That is why it is said that the triple burner is the qi of the triple human origin and should be given repose and nurture" Master Hua's Classic of Central Viscera

"When the Qi of the TB are harmonious, the interior & exterior are in harmony. When they counterflow, the interior & exterior counterflow (i.e. are in abnormal condition)" Master Hua's Classic of Central Viscera

"The various layers of fascia form the largest organ system in the body, & the only system that touches all of the other systems." This is similar to how the triple burner's functions are the only meridian functions that every other channel system depends on to complete their own integral function.

Just like the San Jiao "The fascia, with its connections to the interior of cells and cell nuclei could be a whole body regulatory system that works silently in the background integrating and coordinating the functioning of all of the parts of the body." 2011 book titled ‘Energy Medicine East and West: a natural history of qi’, authors David F.
