KM is NOT the solution to all problems!

So what is knowledge?

Knowledge means different things for different people.

There is no universal agreed definition yet

For simplicity, knowledge can be understood as skills, experiences,

facts, contextual information, know-how, know-what and know-who.

Knowledge is largely personal

Knowledge is highly contextual

Commonly classified into two categories: tacit & explicit

  • Tacit knowledge - Stays in people heads and hard to articulate and codify.
  • E.g. How to communicate with a customer.
  • Explicit knowledge - Easy to articulate and codify
  • E.g. How to descale a coffee machine.

Most of the valuable knowledge is tacit

This classification implies different strategies

are needed for different types of knowledge

Why do we need to manage our knowledge?

Our jobs become more and more

complicated and demanding

We need the right knowledge to

make better decisions

We need new knowledge to

solve new problems

What happens if we don't manage our knowledge?

More time will be spent on looking for knowledge

Resources are wasted on reinventing the wheel

(E.g. Best practices only used by limited people)

Critical knowledge just sits somewhere and is not being used

(Knowledge base becomes knowledge coffin)

Critical knowledge walks away when people leave

What is in your head when you hearing the term

knowledge management

Knowledge management: Approaches or practices that

get the right knowledge to the right people at the right time

So what do we do?

Connect people to people & people to information

(Personalisation & Codification)

Think about the problems that you have

or things that you want to improve
