Points I'll cover

  • My high school speech class experience
  • A common misconception
  • Advice for the semester
Today we are going to touch on all of these unlikely topics...

My senior speech class

A Story
Needed an elective & needed to learn to speak in front of people, not just play basketball.

9 people

Forgot about an assignment so I had to take a 0 on a speech. That meant I had to get an A on every single one to get an A in the class. Let me be clear, I did not get Bs.

It took all quarter, but I did it. Turns out my fear of a bad grade was worse than my fear of public speaking.

Haiku Deck's minimal format encourages concise, bold headlines.

You can import your own image (http://blog.haikudeck.com/import-images-like-a-pro/) or use the integrated Creative Commons image search for a more metaphorical approach (More about that here:

Only Some people are Natural Speakers

A common MIsunderstanding

"A good speech is like a pencil: it has to have a point."

Big IDea

No one knows how nervous you are unless you tell them.

PLAN

Key Point 1
You can support your big idea with three key points.

Presenting them one at a time, rather than all at once, helps each one sink in.

Audience Poll

  • Who has given a speech for class? Not for class?
  • Who has practiced using a video camera?
  • Who has read every word on your PowerPoint?

Senior Speech Class

Announcements & Debate
Two other side notes about my senior speech class.
1. The principal selected me to give the morning and afternoon announcements over the PA to a school of 2,000. All year. This meant I had to announce through basketball season when I was frequently the high scorer, and track season, when I always won the high jump.

2. I joined the Debate Club in the spring because there was this guy I really wanted to go to Prom with...

“The speaker catches fire
looking at their faces.
His words
jump down to stand
in listeners' places.”
