INTO THE WILD

PLOT SUMMARY

• Alex graduates from college and starts driving across the country
• He ditches his car and starts hitchhiking and living like a hobo
• He meets many people and leaves a deep impression on most of them
• He goes to Alaska to try and survive off of the land
• He ends up starving in Alaska after a few months

MAIN CHARACTERS

• Chris McCandless(Alex)- main character
• Ronald Franz- an old man that became very good friends with Alex
• Wayne Westerberg- Alex worked for him for a while before going to Alaska
• Jim Gallien- he was the last person to see Alex alive

CONFLICTS

• Man vs man- Alex had trouble with his parents his whole life
• Man vs nature- He has to survive off the land when he couldn't buy food
• Man vs man- At one point he got in trouble with the police for hitchhiking

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE

• Dialect- "Hand me the goddamn wrench will you? An angry voice demands."
• Dialect shows the way someone speaks and you can infer their background
• Oxymoron- "He was unheeded happy."
• This is a conflict of words. Unheeded mean unsatisfied , but he's still happy

SYMBOLS

• The moose- His poor preparation for the wilderness
• His car- The old car shows his hate for materialistic things
