We explore, define and explain how the INSPIRED method of goal setting helps motivation and success of your dreams, ambitions and desires.

Goal Setting

Choosing the best system
Goal setting can be an exciting but daunting task. Goals need to be set for business on a frequent basis and yet on a personal level, goals may be set for specific areas and never followed through. I find the majority of goal setting challenges across the globe is how each personality type can relate to a specific goal setting system.

SMART goals work great in a business setting but still may lack to address the needs for enjoyment and rewards in their design, your BHAG goal may be great on a personal level but never become realized and you end up stopping early.

To help bridge these gaps JAMSO will now share our unique INSPIRED goal setting concept and system. The system has not been released before to the general public or general business consumption but we felt it is time to allow everyone to benefit from one of our unique methodologies previously only shared with paid clients.

The INSPIRED - I

Individual, Inspiring and Insightful
The start point of your goals should reflect the values and principles you live and exist by. These core elements will be slightly different from nation to nation, region to region, family to family and person to person.
Individual
Recognize and embrace that YOU and/or your business is an INDIVIDUAL sharing a planet. Your goals and aspirations may be similar but not exactly the same as others, your timing may not also be aligned with others. Therefore your weight loss progress, or rowing skills, or academic excellence or process to raise capital for your business will be slightly different than others. Design YOUR goal relative to your INDIVIDUAL circumstances.
Inspired Design
Any goal should be created to INSPIRE enough motivation and action to see it completed to satisfaction. Products sell their commodity AND HOPE through their marketing; Politicians sell their policy based on needs AND HOPE. Without inspired hope, your goal will fall foul of its potential and significant stimulus for action.
Insightful
Humans are naturally curious animals. This curiosity has helped our species adopt and evolve to our current place today. During the path of spreading across the planet we have used prior experiences and generate knowledge that is interesting and INSIGHTFUL. There should be sense of exploration in your goal that generates a benefit beyond just the goal, you should generate a goal that will also provide some unique insight and based on research insights you have also generated in preparation.

The INSPIRED - N

New, Novel and Now
Taking a fresh perspective is healthy in many areas of your life when you come across an obstacle or hurdle. The rest helps clear and clarify your mind and provides NEW thoughts and therefore NEW possible solutions. In today’s interconnected world this element has never been more important or relevant. The increased knowledge share across the internet, ever deeper connected societies and improved technologies make possible today what would have seemed like a pipe dream only five years ago.
Novel
The word NOVEL has two meanings and both are relevant to their inclusion in the JAMSO INSPIRED system. In the first case, NOVEL means a fictitious written story, this is important to recognize that your goal will bring you to a level of performance or skill level that you currently are not attaining, therefore the goal is a future desired state, which will require like every great novel a plot, characters, chapters, good grammar and spelling all the way to bring the reader to a happy ending.

The second meaning for the work NOVEL is to be unusual or something original. This is a key part of the personalization process you need to align the goal to your own unique and novel desires, skills, resources and commitment.
Time for success
Goals without a sense of timing are only aims and wishes. Understanding the need to action NOW and understanding your current state and performance is important to provide the best feedback and preparation for future predicted performance. Living in the present and retaining a clear focus on immediate action for your goal provides the permission and authority to get things done rapidly.

The INSPIRED - S

Sweaty, Social and Specific
In just about all goal setting systems, we seem to agree that making your goals tough or stretched or SWEATY is a good thing. For your motivation to be retained, keeping goals tough and hard provide the mental capacity to reach even higher levels later. It also acts as a motivational force. People perform better and surprise their own achievements when pushed and stretched to their capabilities. So, just like any good cardio physical workout, you should set what we call SWEATY goals.
Social
This century has shown clearer than any other in the history the need and power of living as a global SOCIAL society. The changes we have seen from social media impacts to rising populations to how environmental responsibility is shared across the planet. Our goals need to be respectful and considerate to their SOCIAL impact and a decision needs to be made if you wish to share your goals across your SOCIAL group.

There is a range of different studies that suggest sharing your goals with others acts as a negative impact and yet other studies show the success of holding people or organizations accountable after sharing their goals. You need to make a case to case decision which goals to be SOCIAL with and what SOCIAL impacts the results and process of their pursuit will have.

Most goal setting systems also agree that you need to have a clear SPECIFIC goal statement so your measures of performance and success can be compared to it and with it. The level of specificity can vary, for instance you wish to state a goal of eradicating cancer in all animal life forms across the planet but miss of the date of completion. At JAMSO we prefer where possible to place dates and timelines to add extra accountability but recognize there can be benefit and permits scaled goals if dates are sometimes left off.

The INSPIRED - P

Personal, Purposed, Prioritized
Any goal needs to appeal to the people it impacts. Where possible it should be made as PERSONAL as possible. A business goal should be embraced by its staff to adopt key areas that are also aligned to their PERSONAL ambitions and goals. A common goal for many is to run a marathon, but a better personal goal could be “run a marathon in the top 30% of my age group”.

A goal is just a goal; it is a marker and a point of achievement. The goal alone should never be the purpose and point for itself. What is the point of raising productivity by 3% year after year unless it is also linked to a wider PURPOSE? Consider raising productivity with the mutual goals as being used as an opportunity to provide more benefits to staff and shareholders whilst providing improved value to your customer. Goals should be linked to a broader vision and mission which clarifies the purpose of the goal creation and performance.
Priority
In an age where more people and companies than ever seek to identify the difference between information signal and noise, your goal should be understood to provide the correct level of PRIORITIZATION for you, family and social group or in a work setting, across the organization and supply chain.

Interesting, Impactful and Intentional
Repetition is often cited as the mother of mastery. It is also important within goal setting that the goal and action tasks for its completion are made as INTERESTING as possible. This may not be immediately realized but the collection of 300 repeated data points may reveal some interesting insights for performance.
Impactful
Your goals should be created to make significant changes, indeed IMPACTFUL changes from behavior to actual end performance is a powerful motivator within performance management. The process of attainment and completion should be as positively IMPACTFUL to the participants and intended benefactors as possible.

Each action towards your goal and within your goal should be done with clear INTENTIONS. The need for micro level clarity and INTENTIONS of actions will help bring the needed changes in awareness, communication, speed, results and motivation. Your INTENTIONS should be relative measures of performance so adjustments can be made to improve your outcome results.

The INSPIRED - R

Realistic, Relevant and Reachable
There is some debate about setting REALISTIC goals within the goal setting community. I understand the reasons and intent by many systems to generate a significant mindset shift and therefore they feel that by setting REALISTIC goals will in fact produce lower goals and lower results. We have included REALISTIC within the system as a point of observation. You need to understand fully if your goal is REALISTIC or not. There is no point deciding to set a goal to grow gold and diamond cheese on the moon if a more realistic goal could be set and generate more efficient impact for your time and energy. This point is specifically mentioned to the tight margin business owner or injured sports player. There is every reason to set highly ambitious aims and desires yet a clear step by step progressive goal will allow progress faster.
Relevance
Your goals in each part of your business or life should be linked back to your purpose as already mentioned. However, the RELEVANCE of your goal also helps you double check its impact and priority especially within complex tasks or project goals. There may be little relevance setting a stage 8 goal at stage 2 in your project process or little point in buying all sorts of expensive equipment for your sport to help your performance before understanding which equipment will provide the best help for the medium/long term benefits.
reachable
Another debate area within goal setting is the significance and importance of REACHABLE goals. The debate is partially solved through the 10x mindset. This process argues you create a plan and set of actions to make your goal reachable to those levels – this is the positive side to their approach however the creator of 10x has also stated he does not think his goals are reachable. The key message for us is to understand our level of knowledge if the goal is known or currently unknown to be reachable. This is of specific importance within a business world where investors will want clarity on activities within a business. So measure your status and performance when possible to understand how reachable your goal is and the progress you have made.

The INSPIRED - E

 Ethical, Enjoyable and Exhilarating
There is sufficient research to highlight some weaknesses in goal setting cultures. If the goal is the only thing that matters then unethical behavior can creep into play, we have seen this with Lance Armstrong or VW in their attempts to hit their sports or emission goals at the price of expected ethical behavior. Therefore we include the importance of ETHICS as a design function in goal setting.
Enjoyment
Have you ever gone to an event and had so much fun that you never realized the time goes so quickly? This level of ENJOYMENT is important for your goals. The more fun and ENJOYMENT you generate within and around your goal setting then the higher chance of your willingness and desire to repeat tasks and continue with goal completion. This is also a useful double check of work flow process points to identify areas that could be automated or simply more fun to improve engagement levels.

The anticipated emotional state of goal completion for many tough challenges brings about a state of EXHILARATION. This is an important emotion and should be encouraged and recalled for future motivational use for future tough challenges and support the role of INSPIRATION as mentioned earlier.

The INSPIRED - D

Done Daily, Destined and Developmental
The need for daily reference to your goals and as much daily action as possible, is important to bring the associated mindset and continued commitment to goal completion. Your DONE DAILY mindset can be done at any level but with a focus on progress. If you suffer from an injury on your journey to become a marathon runner then seek alternative exercise or reading material that will still help you reach your desired end point.

Some part of motivational levels in high performers is their understanding of self-worth or belief in destiny. If you have a self-efficacy level that makes your mind into a low DESTINED level of performance it is more likely your long term actions will support this attitude. Therefore we have placed the need for DESTINY checks into our system. You need to ensure you have remained open and determined enough to allow high performance and success is attained.
Development
At the core of all goal setting is the need to move your current state or performance to a new one. Part of this journey is the requirement for DEVELOPMENT in many areas. You may find behavior, habit, intellectual, academic, relationship, cultural, physical and emotional development phases occur during the process. This for us at JAMSO is the very essence of life.
