INSECT ORDER

COLLECTION CELESTE H.

LEPIDOPTERA

~ONE OF THE MOST WIDESPREAD AND INSECT ORDERS IN THE WORLD~
~The scales are flattened "hairs", and give butterflies and moths their extraordinary variety of colors and patterns. They also come off when you touch their wings.

~Both butterflies and moths have wings that are membranous, which means that they are very thin. The insects FRONT WINGS are membranous.

~Another thing that these insects have in common is that they are holometabolous. This means that they all can finish the metamorphosis.

COLEOPTERA

~THE COLEOPTERA INCLUDE MORE SPECIES THAN ANY OTHER ORDER~
~The Rove beetles are claimed to be the largest taxonomic family, after winning against the Snout beetles.

~Beetles can be found in almost any habitat, except the marine and polar regions,

~Beetles undergo completely metamorphosis, and can undergo a series of changes in its body structure.

HEMIPTERA

~THEY ARE KNOW AS THE 'TRUE BUGS'~
~The Greek meaning of this word means "hemi", which is half, while "pteron" means wing.

~When the members were found, it was separated into two orders, based on the differences in wing structure and the position of the rostrum.

~Lice is one of the many close relatives with hemipterans.

ORTHOPTERA

~THIS ORDER MEANS 'STRAIGHT WINGED' IN GREEK~
~The wings and the legs have rows of corrugated bumps.

~They are able to fold their wings.

BLATTODEA

~MOST SPECIES CAN BE THE SIZE OF A THUMBNAIL~
~Four of these species are know as 'pests'.

~Termites were previously regarded as a separate order to cockroaches.

~The spines on the legs were found to help out the insect walk when moving on difficult areas.

ODONATA

~THIS ORDER HAS BEEN GROUPED TOGETHER WITH THE MAYFLIES~
~This order was traditionally grouped with mayflies and other extinct orders.

~They are aquatic or semi-aquatic, so you might see adults near bodies of water.

~Eggs can be found in the water or on vegetation that is near the water.

HYMENOPTERA

~ONE OF LARGEST ORDERS OF INSECTS~
~Their wings have few veins compared to other insects, epically with smaller species.

~Their sting is typically meant to immobilize their prey, but with bee's and wasp's , they can be used for defense.

~Their larvae mostly resemble maggots then caterpillars.

DIPTERA

~IT MEANS 'TWO WINGS' IN THE GREEK MEANING~
~Their distinction from other orders of insects is that a normal fly possesses a pair of flight wings.

~Some true flies have became secondary wingless.

~Flies have more reproduction abilities then most insects.
