PRESENTATION OUTLINE
WHAT SHAPES SOCIETY'S MORALS?
- Politics
- Humanities
- Religion
- Truth
POLITICS
- The government affects our morals with the use of laws. Laws have been ratified that have been based on moral opinion. Ex: Jim Crow laws, Gay rights, abortion, etc. When something is outlawed, the governments hope is to convince the individual that it is morally wrong.
- Saudi Arabia's 'Sharia Law' creates laws allowing violence and death as punishment. As a result of their technique of punishment, the rising terrorist group The Islamic State(IS) has a very similar set of laws that their government has established.
Untitled Slide
- A key difference between the IS and Saudi Arabia's Sharia Law is how they expose their punishments. Saudi Arabia works to keep their works behind the scenes while the IS chooses to broadcast theirs openly.
- The separation between church and state is vital, yet there's no line drawn between morality and justice?
RELIGION
- The purpose of religion is to provide guidance and a sense of protection. People let religion shape their morals because that is what they are taught is correct.
- To be taught not to question is to teach intolerance. If nobody asks "why?" We will blindly accept whatever is handed to us.
TRUTH
- Truth is found from experience. It is based solely on the reasoning and mutual agreement between two free beings.
- Reason and justification make up truth. While one action may be justifiable to one group of people, that same action may cause havoc with another. This is due to the differences between what people believe to be true and false/ right or wrong.
HUMANITIES
- Music, art, and literature have an impact on society's morals. Throughout time the styles of art have changed in relation to what society deemed important, and how they have felt during that time period.
- The Dark Ages-Christian church dominated Europe. The crusades and the development of the Gregorian chant and Universities were the beginning of the the power that politics and religion would use to influence societies.
Belief is what shapes society's morals. Believing in something offers the individual ideas and values that can help society grow as a whole. In contrast, believing in something can also lead to society's rejection of change.
