1. Project-Based Learning
long-term, interdisciplinary, student-centered problem solving
Project-Based Learning is a teaching/learning method that is characterized by long-term, interdisciplinary, student-centered activities.
What is PBL?
- a teaching/learning method where students engage in long-term, complex, interdisciplinary activities
- students work together to investigate and problem-solve
- then share their learnings with others
PBL builds peer communication and relationships, meets varying skills and learning styles, and increases cognitive development and engagement among students!
Steps for Implementing PBL?
- Search - teacher identifies or poses a scientific problem
- Solve - students work in teams to gather information and generate a solution
- Create - students create a project or presentation of their learning and solution
- Share - students communicate their findings which may inspire future search questions
2. Inquiry Learning
a learning method where students pose questions, ideas, and analyses
Inquiry Learning is a teaching/learning method where students pose questions, ideas, and analyses.
What is IL?
- a teaching/ learning method where students are introduced to a question, issue, or problem related to their world
- students explore the topic, explain and elaborate on their learnings, and expands on their conclusions to perform tasks, resolve conflicts, or make meaning
Inquiry Learning encourages students to think and inquire about real-world problems, then apply what they've learned.
Steps for Implementing PBL?
- Engage - teacher poses a problem and the learner identifies questions, issues, or problems related to their word
- Explore - learners gather, organize, interpret, analyze, and evaluate data
- Explain - learners explain and clarify what they've discovered, reach conclusions, and communicate findings in varying forms or mods
- Expand - learners apply their conclusions to solve problems, perform tasks, resolve conflicts, or make meaning
3. Socratic Dialogue
students are challenged think critically about difficult issues
Socratic Dialogue is a teaching/learning method where students are challenged to think critically about ethical or difficult issues.
What is SD?
- a teaching/ learning method where students are given a controversial topic and are challenged to think critically on difficult issues
- the goal is NOT to have students answer unanswered questions, but rather challenge their assumptions by thinking critically
Socratic Dialogue is not used for the purpose of solving a question. It is intended to teach students to think critically, consider diverse perspectives, and synthesis multiple ideas.
Steps for Implementing PBL?
- Introduce Topic - teacher introduces a controversial topic and provides related questions for students
- Discuss - teacher begins the discussion, then allows equal time for all students to listen, discuss, elaborate, and clarify
- Synthesize - teacher clarifies, synthesizes, and restates opinions of the class
