Project Based Learning

  • Long term projects
  • Goals and objectives set from the start
  • Students work autonomously
  • Finished product can be presented

Project Based Learning

  • Projects allow students to learn content in a meaningful way
  • Requires critical thinking, collaboration, and communication
  • Allows creativity and authenticity

Project Based Learning Example

  • Students in an elementary school classroom are studying modes of transportation. They must research all modes of transportation and make a timeline. After that, they choose one of the modes of transportation and build a 3D model of it.

Inquiry Learning

  • Students ask questions and seek the answers
  • Everything is based on questions
  • Self- evaluate and self-reflect

Inquiry Learning

  • Students learn through answer the questions they have asked
  • Teachers guide students with probing questions, modeling, providing resources and feedback

Inquiry Learning Example

  • Students in an art history class come up with a list of questions about exhibits before visiting the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. They will then take the list with them and look for ways to answer questions by asking docents, viewing the art, and reading the information provided throughout the museum. Students write down the answers to their questions and turn it in.

Socratic Dialogue

  • The class has a discussion based on a question posed by the teacher
  • NOT a debate
  • Discussion ends in one consensus
  • The teacher facilitates the discussion to keep it on topic and respectful

Socratic Dialogue

  • We learn by discussing ideas with each other
  • We compare others' beliefs to our own
  • Our beliefs change or become stronger

Socratic Dialogue Example

  • Students in a high school government class are asked to discuss if it is still acceptable to use the death penalty. They engage in discussion facilitated by the teacher and reach a consensus at the end of the discussion.
