Information Processing Family

Project-based Learning

  • Student centered
  • Students are given a complex long-term challenge
  • The challenge is to construct an artifact to show what they have learned

Example

  • Students have learned about invasive species.
  • Students will then develop a research project where they have to build a trap to kill the invasive species. Constraints will be given about the trap.

Inquiry Learning

  • 5 E's ( Engage, Explore,Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate)
  • Ask questions, investigate, discuss, reflect on learning

  • Students or teacher asks questions
  • Student centered and teacher facilitated
  • Asking questions to make meaning and sense of the world

Example

  • Students will be given the question "Due to climate change, which green energy solution is the one that the government should invest in?
  • There will be a class discussion, then students will do research, then discuss again.

Socratic Dialogue

  • Teacher or student may be the leader
  • Class is given an open-ended discussion usually involving ethics
  • Class discussion where students elaborate and clarify their statement

  • Leader may clarify and elaborate statements and can be the devil's advocate

Example

  • Teacher gives the class the question "Should humans use gene editing on embryos to make disease resistant babies?
  • Class will be separated into two groups: Pro vs Con
