Sensory Memory: Processes incoming stimuli and can store 3-7 pieces of information for a brief period of time.

Working Memory: temporary system where the most relevant info. is stored & connected to prior knowledge

Long-Term Memory: unlimited and permanent storage system for facts and information

Project-Based Learning

  • Centers around complex problems which students solve over a longer period of time
  • Strong emphasis on the use of collaboration and cooperative learning groups
  • Students create an authentic product or artifact to demonstrate learning

  • Students cultivate interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills
  • Meaningful activities, both personally and academically
  • Instills civic and democratic values
  • Real-world applications

Inquiry Learning

  • Students identify conflicts/problems and investigate them scientifcally
  • Individual process with use of formative self-assessment
  • Students are actively engaged in their learning & apply their ideas
  • Uses 4 areas of literacy - reading, writing, speaking/listening, & vocab.
  • Teacher provides guidance, resources, and feedback

The 5 "E" Learning Cycle Model

  • Engagement - a question is posed and problems are identified
  • Explore - data is collected & interpreted from multiple source
  • Explain & Clarify - conclusions are drawn & teacher provides feedback
  • Expand - applies new knowledge to a novel task
  • Evaluation - formative self-assessment of new skills

Socratic Method

  • Discussion used to explore broad topics or questions
  • Students exchange ideas & cultivate critical thinking skills
  • Students make claims and support them w/ textural evidence
  • Teacher poses questions and follow-up questions
  • No one correct answer, but rather students views are challenged and shaped
  • 2 circles - 1 discussing, other observes

Teacher begins discussion w/ open-ended question, provides follow-up questions throughout, and summarizes and restates learning at the end.

  • Inquiry Learning - investigative process by which students explore a driving question or conflic
  • Socratic Method - Students explore broad topics as a group and formulate opinions
