Inferring

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE GIFT OF THE MAGI

MAKING INFERENCES

Objective:
I can define inferring and cite examples where this is at work in the text. I can explain why readers should be conscience of moments where they need to make inferences. In other words, I can explain the importance of making inferences in a text.

Proving the objective 1:
~ We first have to make an inference in the story when we hear " In the vestibule below a letter box into which no letter would go, and an electric button from which no mortal finger could coax." (O'Henry 2).We infer that they have no family around.

Proving the objective 2:
~ We also can infer when O'Henry states "$1.87. And the next day would be Christmas. There was clearly nothing to do but flop down." (O'Henry 1) Now the reader realizes that Della is poor and can't afford much.

Proving the objective 3:
~ Lastly we infer where they live. "A furnished flat at $8 per week." (O'Henry 1) As a reader knowing that "flats" comes from England you can infer that's where they live and start to visualize the seen of the book.

Making inferences:
Readers should be conscious moments where they need to make inferences because without making inferences in the story you could miss out on important details on characters and settings.
