Inequalities

By: Amya Willis/Final Exam Project/Ms.Foster's Math Class

What is INEQUALITY?

  • the relation between two expressions that are not equal, employing a sign such as ≠ “not equal to,” > “greater than,” or
  • Ex #1: 3x
  • EX #2: x-5 > 0
  • EX #3: 3n-1

How do you solve an INEQUALITY?

  • It takes two steps to solve an equation or inequality that has more than one operation:
  • Simplify using the inverse of addition or subtraction.
  • Simplify further by using the inverse of multiplication or division.

What is the purpose of INEQUALITIES?

  • Many simple inequalities can be solved by adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing both sides until you are left with the variable on its own. But these things will change direction of the inequality: Multiplying or dividing both sides by a negative number. Swapping left and right hand sides.

Example Problems
