  • Spinning Jenny created by James Hargreaves, spin multiple threads at once
  • Water frame created by Richard Arkwrights , powered water wheels
  • Steam engine James Watts, used for many things ex: powering transportation
  • Steam boat Robert Fulton, helped advance transportation

Worker Life

  • Could not talk to boss
  • poor working conditions (diseases, poisons, limbs lost)
  • Value of life decreased due to harmful machinery, poor environment
  • Worked many hours for very little
  • Easily replaceable, every job was very competitive

ROLE OF WOMEN /CHILDREN

  • No restrictions on working condition/age therefore children worked
  • Fortunate women worked as maids or nannies
  • Had to work in both physical and domestic work
  • 48% of children were injured in the work force annually
  • Lesser rights than men

JOBS

  • Need for more engineers
  • 52% of the population worked in factories
  • Manufacturing (steel, coal, clothes)

  • Middle- business men, mangers (lived in good conditions)
  • Lower- factory workers, commoners, women, and children (lived in bad conditions)

  • mainly tried to improve working conditions
  • helped further their rights and privileges
  • Usually consisted of hundreds of people
