SOCIAL CLASSES

  • Wealthy elite were at the top 5% of the population
  • and contrilled 30- 40% of wealth.
  • Middle class were lawyers, doctors, business managers, engineers, accountants.
  • Lower middle class, small shop keepers, traders, and prosperous peasants.
  • Lower middle class helped the classes above them.

WORKING CLASS

  • Working classes made up 80% of the population
  • Pesants, farm laborers, and share cropers.

URBAN WORKING CLASSES

  • Included artisans and semi skilled laborers
  • Experience improvement after 1870's
  • More money for clothes and leisure activities.
  • At the bottom was unskilled laborers.

TREATMENT OF WOMEN

  • 19th century people thought women should just stay home
  • Later in 19th century, birth rate decreased
  • Middle class women had to start to earn money
  • High demand for low paid workers led to women being hired
