RELIGION

  • Hinduism: Vedas, Karma, Dharma, Moskha, Castes, Polytheism, and Veincarnatiom
  • Buddhism: Ego is bad, strive to be modest, they reject Brahmin, reincarnation, be like Buddha, find Nirvana, and peace

ECONOMIC

  • Traded, taxes, currency, silk goods, textiles, and spices
  • Enforced heavy taxes on common people and traded extensively with South East Asia

INTELLECTAL

  • Used Arabic number system
  • Wrote poems
  • Used philosophy
  • Followed religion for intelligence
  • Also had names and coins

POLITICAL

  • Centralized government
  • Gupta empire came into power in 320 C.E.
  • Didn't have a bureaucracy, but relied on local rulers.

SOCIAL

  • Birth determined social status and little mobility
  • Caste system; each caste was associated with a particular part of the body of the Bod Purusha
  • 1) Sundra (feet): priest & teachers
  • 2) Vaisya (thighs): warriors & rulers
  • 3) Kshatriya (shoulders): farmers & merchants
  • 4) Brahmin (head): labors
  • 5) Untouchables: polluted labor

ARTISTIC

  • Storylines from poems and military adventure
  • Indian art appreciated nature, payed homage to religion values, but also life.
