my independent study

  • My independent study topic is the nervous system.
  • I wanted to learn the many facts and injuries about the nervous system.
  • I want to be a doctor when I grow up so this really helps me.

My progess

  • I started with neurons and nerve cells and their functions, diseases etc.
  •  I went a little deep into neurons and I decided to do an overview.
  • I started a little slow then I started to catch up.
  • In the future I'd like to study the brain and it's functions, diseases etc

Parts of a neuron

  • A typical neuron possesses a cell body (often called the soma).
  • It also has dendrites and axons.
  • The generic term for dendrite or axon is neurite.

More details

  • An axon is a special cellular extension that arises from the cell body.
  • The cell body of a neuron frequently gives rise to multiple dendrites.
  • The axon may branch hundreds of times before it terminates

Neuron's functions

  • The neurons transmit information from the brain to the body.
  • They are responsible for telling the body what to do.
  • Without the speed of neurons, are reactions or actions will be much slower.

How neurons are the same as other cells

  • Neurons are surrounded by a cell membrane.
  • Neurons have a nucleus that contains genes.
  • Neurons contain cytoplasm, mitochondria and other organelles.

How many of these cells are in everything's body

  • The number of neurons in the brain varies from species .
  • For humans, most estimates have ranged between 86 - 100 billion.

The Brain

  • The brain is an organ located inside your head.
  • The brain and the spinal cord form the central nervous system.
  • This complex system controls everything we do.
  • Each part of the brain has a different job.
  • There are 3 parts of the brain: cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem

Cerebrum

  • The cerebrum uses information from our 5 senses .
  • It also controls our emotions, and our ability to talk, think, read.
  • Then it tells us how to respond.

Cerebellum

  • The cerebellum is located under the cerebrum at the back of the brain.
  • The cerebellum is located under the cerebrum at the back of the brain.

Brainstem

  • The brain stem connects the brain and the spinal cord.
  • The brainstem controls functions such as breathing, blood pressure, etc.

How the spinal cord helps the brain

  • The spinal cord is the pathway that connects the brain to the nerves.
  • This is important because the brain could use the spinal cord to send info
