THE COMMON COLD

COMMON COLD

  • Inflammation of the mucus in the nose & throat
  • It's easily catchable through touch and inhaling
  • Syntoms are runny/stuffed nose, sneezing, sore throat
  • Influenza, parainfluenza, respiratory syncytial viruses, and reoviruses
  • ⬆️ causes the common cold

INFLUENZA

  • AKA 'The Flu'
  • A viral infection
  • Happens more in fall/ winter
  • It can sometimes lead to infections after recovery
  • Worse than a cold and lasts longer

INFLUENZA (CONT.)

  • Caused by influenza viruses A and B
  • Different strains of the flu virus each year
  • Attacks upper or lower respiratory

ASTHMA

ASTHMA

  • Chronic disorder of the lungs
  • Inflamed airways
  • Causes wheezing, coughing, chest tighness, shortness of breath
  • Syntoms range from mild to potentially fatal (can occur at any age)
  • 1/2 of cases occurs at less then 10 yrs old

DIABETES

  • Disorder of blood; body is unable to produce enough insulin
  • Glucose (sugar) levels are abnormal
  • Two major forms: Type I and type II
  • Type I: insulin-producing cells are destroyed
  • Type II: slowness in production of insulin from the pancreas

LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS

LUPUS

  • Autoimmune disorder; causes chronic inflammation
  • Three kinds: discoid, systemic, drug-induced
  • Discoid: affects only the skin; rash on upper head area
  • Systemic: most common, can affect virtually any organ
  • No two people will have identical symptoms

POLIOMYELITIS

POLIO (INFANTILE PARALYSIS)

  • Acute viral infectious disease of nervous system
  • Begins with fever, headache; sometimes followed by permanent paralysis
  • Paralysis affects fewer than 1% of persons
  • More than 90% show no illness at all
  • Polio has been eradicated in the 2000s

CREUTZFELDT-JAKOB DISEASE

CREUTZFELDT-JAKOB DISEASE

  • Rare fatal degenerative disease of central nervous system
  • Occurs in adults between 40-70 yrs old
  • Syntoms: vague psychiatric/ behavioral changes, dimentia,
  • Abnormal visions and involuntary movements
  • Fatal after a year of syntoms

HIV/AIDS

HIV

  • Human immunodeficiency virus
  • Slowly attacks the immune system
  • Leaves a person vulnerable to many infections

AIDS

  • Final stage of an HIV infection
  • Fatal infections and cancers can occur
  • Widespread in the 1980s- especially in Africa
  • 38 million people living with HIV (since 2004)
  • 20 million died of HIV since 1991

EBOLA

EBOLA

  • Virus of the family Filoviridae
  • Characterized by extreme fever, hemorrhages
  • Fatality rate for humans: 50-90%
  • Takes its name from the Ebola R. where it first manifested
  • Closely related to the Marburg Virus

CANCER

  • The uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells
  • Affects one in three persons born
  • Major cause of sickness and death
  • Significant increase improvements in cancer treatments have been made
  • Researchers now have a better understanding of cancer

  • Leukemia: 25,000
  • Lung cancer: 158,000+
  • Brain cancer: 14,000+
  • Kidney cancer: 14,000+
