PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Increase Punishment for Animal Abuse
each year millions of animals are abused through neglect, malnutrition, abandonment, and malicious cruelty
I think that the punishment for animal abuse should be increased. Animal abuse is often over looked as a major crime and punishment is loosely enforced.
all fifty sates in the U.S have a laws against animal abuse. the minimum law in almost all states is one year in jail, 2,500 dollar fine and a two year probation from owning an animal. six states have increased their laws.
laws that currently exist are broad not fully outlining what animal abuse pertains to and these laws are applied loosely, making it easy for abusers to get out of trouble.
in many cases abusers will have a two year probation from owning a pet; but how are animal abuse and child abuse different? in a child abuse case the parent loses ownership of the child.
on the opposite had some people believe that the current law is working, organizations such as the Farm Bureau worry about how increased law will affect them.
Farmers apart of the Farm Bureau worry that a farmer may land in jail for dehorning his cattle because this can be seen as animal abuse.
The bills for increasing animal abuse clearly exempt any accepted and approved veterinary practices.
increasing the punishment for animal abuse will provide a more specific and structured law that will aid in a fight to stop animal abuse
a way to help is report any cases of animal abuse that you see, and to help out with nonprofit organizations such as the Humane society and the Arrow Fund.
