BERLIN COFERENCE

  • It happened in between 1884 and 1885.
  • It was also called the Congo conference.
  • In this conference they decided how to divide up Africa.
  • They did it this way to avoid warring in the European countries.

EUROPEAN IMPERIALISM

  • It was the conquering, occupation, and annexation of Africa.
  • The Portuguese were the first to occupy this area.
  • It began at the end of the 18th century.
  • Only 10% of Africa was controlled in the 1870s.

IMPERIALISTIC METHODS

  • They influenced the governments in their favor.
  • Things like spheres of influence are used for control
  • They replaced leaders with leaders that would listen to them.
  • Lots of times they used indirect control.

END OF COLINESLISM

  • It ended after World War 2.
  • They couldn't control them
  • They got diseases and died from them.
  • They didn't want to fight a big war over it.

LASTING EFFECTS

  • Many borders of countries still exist today from colonization.
  • African culture was changed by them.
  • Lots of racial oppression exists because of them.
  • Widespread poverty and poor cities and countries.
