PRESENTATION OUTLINE

body systems:

The Immune and Integumentary Systems

integumentary system

Skin, nails, and hair.

functions

  • Helps the body maintain homeostasis
  • Prevents potential:
  • Injuries
  • Infections
  • Fluid losses

Skin

  • Protect internal organs from bacteria and pathogens or injury
  • Storage center for lipids and water
  • Regulate body temperature by radiation, conduction, convection, evaporation
  • Sensation of touch, cold, heat, pain

Nails

  • Protect the distal phalanx(finger tip) from injury
  • Enhances precise delicate movements of the distal digits through pressure
  • Enhances the sensitivity of the finger tip through counter-pressure
  • Funtions as a tool (extended precision grip) exp pulling out splinters

Hair

  • Redirects sweat and water
  • Insulation and protection from various external factors
  • Keeping dust out of the ears canals, eyes, nose
  • Keeps the body warm by trapping heat

the immune system

  • White blood cells
  • Lymph nodes
  • Lymph vessels

What is the function of the immune system?

The immune system defends the body against diseases and pathogens.

White blood cells

  • Destroys bacteria, viruses, and toxic proteins
  • Helps body develop immunities
  • Defends body against diseases

lymph nodes help defend the body against:

  • Bacteria
  • Viruses
  • Infectious microbes
  • Cancer

lymph vessels

carry lymph back to veins in the neck.

The immune system protects the body from internal invaders.

The integumentary system prevents external invaders.

disorders

  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Skin cancer
  • Allergies

Swollen lymph nodes: sometimes lymph nodes become tender and swell up while fighting infections.

Allergies

the immune system overreacts to a non-threatening foreign object.

Skin cancer

  • Spots on skin
  • Caused by too much exposure to sun
  • Can also be caused by radiation/ X rays
