what is ict?

  • ICT stands for Information communication and Information
  • Any technology that allows us to process data and to communicate.
  • Ex. Phones, Internet, Networks

Data & information

  • data is simply any numbers, letters or symbols that can be entered into a computer system.
  • Information is DATA that has a meaning
  • Ex. Date, Password

System

  • A system has 3 stages
  • INPUT - PROCESS-OUTPUT
  • To Feed in - To do something with input - To give the Result
  • Ex. Typing "apple"
  • Input= "apple" - Process= Typing - Output= Shown on screen

Computer

  • A device that stores and processes information according to a set of instructions.
  • Ex. A Laptop, Desktop Computer

HArdware

  • The physical parts of the computer that can be touched, and feel
  • Ex. Mouse , Keyboard, Printer

Software

  • Instructions that tell computer hardware what to do
  • Ex. Windows, Apple, Linux, Ubuntu

Central Processing Unit (CPU)

  • The CPU is the 'brain' of the computer. It is the device that carries out software instructions.

Main Memory

  • Also known as primary storage.
  • Stores the data to be processed by CPU

Random Access Memory (RAM)

  • temporarily stores the instructions that the computer is running,
  • a volatile storage device.

Read-only Memory (Rom)

  • to hold a small, special piece of software: the 'boot up' program.
  • non-volatile storage

input devices

  • Devices that pass data into the computer.
  • Ex. keyboard, a mouse and a webcam

Output devices

  • Devices that take data from the computer
  • Ex. monitor, a printer and a loudspeaker

Backing Storage

  • Devices that can store data in a computer system (Excluding ROM/RAM)
  • Also known as secondary storage
  • Ex. Hard drive, a CD-ROM, a floppy disc
