Facilitation
Adds an impartial facilitator.
Helps move along the process when stuck.
Often times brings up new ideas and can mend relationships.
Must be agreed upon by both parties.
3.
Negotiation
Meetings can be called by either the school or parent
Usually the first step in resolving complaints/mishaps
Allows both parties to come up with a solution to a problem that was found
No cost to district and less complicated than a due process hearing.
4.
Mediation
Use of an impartial mediator to help with conflict resolution
Decision is legally binding
Mediator helps move things along and keep meetings from becoming adversarial
5.
Due Process
Formal complaint filed against the district
Comes about when IDEA is not followed or services not offered appropriately
Involves legal counsel and is a formal and involved process
6.
Relationships

Often times when the relationship is repaired resolution comes much easier
Always best to be proactive with school/family relationships
