About the IDitarod

  • 1,000 mile dogsled race
  • From Anchorage, AK to Nome, AK
  • Begins on the first Saturday in March - takes 9-14 days to finish
  • First run in 1973
  • Celebrates the Nome Serum Run of 1925

Dogs are trained to run for a long time in cold weather. Siberian Huskies, Alaskan huskies and Malamutes are some of the dogs that run the Iditarod.

Dogs wear coats to stay warm, boots to protect their paws, and are examined by a vet many times during the race.

The person driving the dogsled is called the musher. Mushers can be boys or girls. Susan Butcher is a famous Iditarod musher. She won the race 4 times.

Dallas Seavey is the youngest person ever to win the Iditarod and the fastest. He has won 4 times!
