MULLER V. OREGON

  • Argued 1/15/1908 Decided 2/24/1908
  • OR enacted a law that limited women to 10 work hours in factories
  • Supreme Court ruled there was no constitutional violation
  • Law was upheld b/c OR attorney exported reports of harmful
  • physical, social and emotional effects of women working long shifts

GRISWOLD V. CONN

  • Argued: March 1965 Decided: June 1965
  • -Connecticut criminalized any medical treatment to married women that
  • prevented conception
  • Supreme Court ruled 1st 3rd & 9th amendments created a right to privacy
  • Made Connecticut law null and void

REED V. REED

  • Argued 10/19/71 Decided 11/22/71
  • conflict over the estate of their dead son, who had left his estate to his mother.
  • father was given the property, both filed petitions with probate court in Idaho
  • customary to rule in the favor of the men rather than the women.
  • Based on the 14th amendment, the Supreme Court also declared Idaho's law unconstitutional.

ROE V. WADE

  • Argued: December 1971 Re-Argued: October 1972
  • Decided: January 1973
  • Texas made abortion illegal unless it threatened the woman's life.
  • Court decided that woman's right of abortion fell under a woman's rights of privacy
  • Changed the laws of 46 states & stated that women were legally allowed abortions in the 1st trimester

CRAIG V. BOREN

  • OK prohibited sale of nonintoxicating beer to boys under 21 & girls 18
  • Argued 10/5/76. Decided by burger court 1975-81 Decided by sate court 12/20/76
  • violated equal protection clause of 14 amendment.
  • Craig challenged as discriminatory.
  • Females could get drunk & raped easy by no intoxicated males.

KYLLO V. UNITED STATES

  • law enforcement agents used thermal imaging to detect hot spots outside of Kyollo's apartment
  • they detected the hot spots & got a warrant to search the apartment where they found Kyollo growing marijuana
  • SCOTUS ruled 5-4 in favor of Kyollo that the use of thermal imaging constituted an illegal search.
  • Argued 2/20/01. Decided 6/1/01
  • Gov used device not in general public use, to explore home that would've been unknown w/o physical intrusion

GONZALES v. CARHART

  • 2003 congress & president passed partial birth abortion ban act
  • Carhart believed abortion didn't affect health of woman q
  • Argued 11/8/06 Decided 4/18/07
  • attorney General Alberto Gonzales v Leroy carhart ( against ban)
  • Principles of Roe v Wade

BETTY DUKES V. WALMART

  • Greeter for Walmart in California
  • Filed class action lawsuit alleging women were paid less in comparable positions
  • Argued 3/29/2011. Decided 6/20/2011
  • Certified class (female workers in all walmarts employed after 12/26/98) 1.5 mil
  • Supreme Court ruled the class action was to large & reversed the lower court
