  • An accumulation of blood in the front chamber of the eye

  • Caused by blunt eye trauma
  • Also caused by a projectile or an explosion
  • 34% of ER cases are caused by a projectile

DIAGNOSIS

  • Must be examined by an ophthalmologist
  • In some cases there are microscopic clots

  • Pressure within the eye can increase
  • Special eyewear is recommended after hyphema

TREATMENT

  • Blood thinners and NSAIDs should be avoided
  • Eye should be shielded, but not patched
