PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Hydroelectricity

By Tori Chambers and Sarah Hundley

Hydroelectricity

  • It is considered renewable energy
  • It feeds off of the water cycle

How it works

  • Power generators are placed inside of dams
  • Water flowing into dams spins the turbine blades
  • Turbines are connected to generators
  • Power is produced and dispersed to homes and businesses

ADVANTAGES...

  • Minimal pollution
  • Water is provided free by nature
  • Reliable

Disadvantages

  • High investment costs
  • Fish entrainment
  • Hydrology dependent

climate change

  • Methane may form in reservoirs
  • Methane is emitted into the atmosphere

An unique story...
An oil transformer exploded at a plant in Siberia. Three turbines were destroyed, and the ceiling fell which then violently flooded.

The dam was not damaged. There was 12 confirmed deaths and 64 went missing (presumed dead as of 2009).

The transformer had enough oil to produce a three-mile long oil spill that moved downstream. The dam produced 25% of the energy of RusHydro.
