HYDROELECTRIC POWER

Hydroelectric power is generated when water falls onto a turbine. The turbine turns, which powers a generator that creates electricity. This energy is used to power buildings and homes across the world. Hydropower provides about a fifth of the electricity used across the world. For example, 70% of the energy used in Washington is created by hydroelectric dams.

Hydropower is clean energy. It produces no bad fumes or gases.

POSITIVES

  • Clean energy
  • Hydropower is available anytime

NEGATIVES

  • Can effect river ecosystems
  • Damming rivers can disrupt wildlife

Hydropower is widely accepted because it is versatile. It is renewable, produces less pollution than other sources, and is readily available.
