How is water created

  • What is it? How is it made?
  • Hydropower is the use of moving water to create electricity to power buildings and appliances like ovens or lightbulbs.

How is water created

  • Solar energy evaporates water then the water vapor condenses in the air. Then the water droplets form a cloud then it starts raining.

How is it harnessed

  • Hydro power is harnessed when moving water spins a wheel in a dam and then the wheel generates electricity.

How is it harnessed

  • We can also use ocean waves to create electricity by directing them into a channel so a wave can hit water turbines.

Advantages

  • refueled by the water cycle
  • When harnessed it doesn't release any waste products such as Co2
  • Hydro dams do not directly produce harmful pollutants.
  • Hydro power is very effective and inexpensive, "Modern hydro turbines can convert as much as 90% of the available energy into electricity."
  • Hydro power is the leading source of renewable energy, "It provides more than 97% of all the electricity generated by renewable sources world wide."
  • By closing the dam gate you can control how much electricity is made.
  • A reservoir created from construction can benefit fisheries and perserves.
  • Fish ladders on dams assist salmon on reaching their breeding grounds
  • There is more than one way to harness energy from water.(Dams,Tidal Barrages, wave energy etc.
  • When water goes through a dam it is not wasted.

  • When water goes through a dam it is not wasted.

Disadvantages

  • We can't control when the water cycle starts generating water.
  • Dams block sediment and pollutants leaving for future generations.
  • Some dams can block salmon from getting to their spawning grounds

Disadvantages

  • Reservoirs created by dams can flood over land that could be used for farming, buildings, and could cause relocation.
  • Hydro dams are very costly and maintain high standards.
  • Construction of dams could cause some Co2 emissions cause of tools used to manufacture concrete and steel.

Disadvantages

  • Fish get killed by swimming into hydro turbines
  • "Tidal barrages can change the tidal level in a basin and increase turbidity"
  • Hydro Power needs rainfall to work. Not useful during drought season.
  • Dams can cause flooding to lower areas

Facts about Hydro Power

  • Hydro Power is the leading power source of renewable energy with 97.9% electricity produced compared to other renewables.
  • The United States is the second worlds largest user of hydro power with 260 killowatthours

Facts about Hydro Power

  • 99% of Norway's electricity comes from hydro power and they have an EPI score of 81.1
  • By using hydro power we save up to 22 billion gallons of oil or other fossil fuels.

Facts about Hydro Power

  • In the United States, we produce enough electricity to serve all the homes in Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, North and South Dakota, Kentucky, and Tennessee by using hydropower.

Where is it located

  • Hydro power is located any where there are big bodies of water like lakes, oceans, and rivers.
