WHAT ARE HURRICANES
A hurricane is a strong storm.
They are made from heavy rain, strong winds and large waves.
A hurricane can be 600 miles across and have strong winds at speeds of 75 to 200 mph.
Hurricanes last about a week moving 10 to 20 mph.

WHAT ARE HURRICANES CONT.
The hurricane becomes stronger when ocean water gets too warm (80 degrees) and evaporates.
The eye is the calmest part of the hurricane. It has light winds and fair weather.
Hurricanes go counter clock wise in the Northern Hemisphere and clock wise in the Southern Hemisphere .

NAMING OF HURRICANES
Atlantic hurricanes are named by the National Hurricane Center.
They are named in alphabetical order.
They alternate the genders every year.
The first hurricane in 2016 was named Alex.
A bad hurricane's name is always retired.

DAMAGE FROM HURRICANES
Flooding.
Tornados.
High winds can destroy trees and can damage buildings.
Hurt people.

HURRICANE SAFETY TIPS
Stay indoors.
Board up windows.
Do not drive.
Have a first aid kit.
Have cash on hand.
Have canned food and bottled water.
Keep a flash light and battery operated radio.
Make sure your car has enough gas.
