WHAT ARE HURRICANES

  • A hurricane is a strong storm.
  • They are made from heavy rain, strong winds and large waves.
  • A hurricane can be 600 miles across and have strong winds at speeds of 75 to 200 mph.
  • Hurricanes last about a week moving 10 to 20 mph.

WHAT ARE HURRICANES CONT.

  • The hurricane becomes stronger when ocean water gets too warm (80 degrees) and evaporates.
  • The eye is the calmest part of the hurricane. It has light winds and fair weather.
  • Hurricanes go counter clock wise in the Northern Hemisphere and clock wise in the Southern Hemisphere .

NAMING OF HURRICANES

  • Atlantic hurricanes are named by the National Hurricane Center.
  • They are named in alphabetical order.
  • They alternate the genders every year.
  • The first hurricane in 2016 was named Alex.
  • A bad hurricane's name is always retired.

DAMAGE FROM HURRICANES

  • Flooding.
  • Tornados.
  • High winds can destroy trees and can damage buildings.
  • Hurt people.

HURRICANE SAFETY TIPS

  • Stay indoors.
  • Board up windows.
  • Do not drive.
  • Have a first aid kit.
  • Have cash on hand.
  • Have canned food and bottled water.
  • Keep a flash light and battery operated radio.
  • Make sure your car has enough gas.
