In the harsh desert of the Tarapaca region (Norte Grande, Chile) the Nitrate mining towns of Humberstone and Santa Laura flourished from 1870 to 1961. They were abandoned when a cheap synthetic substitute for fertilizer was create­d and became ghost towns as a consequence. In 2005 they were inscribed in the World Heritage List by Unesco.
