HUMAN SKELETON

  • The bony framework in our body is called a skeleton.
  • Adult human skeleton is made up of 206 bones.
  • The four main parts are:-
  • The skull, backbone, rib cage and the limbs
  • Bones consist of a soft and spongy layer called a bone marrow

FUNCTIONS OF SKELETON

  • Supports and gives form to the body.
  • Protects internal organs.
  • Aids body movements.
  • Makes blood cells.

SKULL

  • Bony structure which protects the Brain
  • The upper part is made up of 8 flat bones
  • The face and jaw contains 14 bones
  • The lower jaw is only movable bone
  • The lower jaw enables to chew food and talk

THE BACKBONE OR SPINE

  • Ring like bones run from skull to pelvis
  • Provides poster while allowing movement and flexibility
  • Protects the spinal cord
  • Supports the upper body weight
  • Made of 33 irregular shaped bones called vertebrae

THE RIB CAGE

  • Long,curved individual bones with joints to the spinal vertebrae .
  • Protects the chest cavity , where important organs reside.
  • Allows some movement which helps to stabilize the chest during inhaling and exhaling.
  • Made of 24 bones; each symmetrically paired on right and left side.

HUMAN LIMBS

  • Each arm is attached to a shoulder blade.
  • Wrist , arm and all fingers add up to 54 bones.
  • Attached to the pelvis.
  • The bone that goes through the pelvis and the knee is called the femur .
  • The femur is the longest bone of the body.
