Digestive SyStem

Includes: Mouth, Esophagus, Stomach, Liver, Pancreas and Small/Large Intest

Functions of the digestive system

  • Extracts and absorbs nutrients from food
  • Removes Waste
  • Maintains water chemical balances

Mouth

Breaks down food and makes it easy to swallow.

Espophogus

A long straight tube that connects the mouth to the stomach.

Stomach

Break down food and absorb the nutrients

Liver

Secretes bile, that breaks down fat so it can be digested.

Small Intestine

Breaks down most of the food and absorbes the nutrients.

Large intestine

Compacts and dehydrates the undigested material.

salivary glands

Makes enzymes to digest carbohydrates.

gallbladder

Stores and concentrates bile for the liver.

Endocrine system

Includes: Pituitary, hypothalamus, pancreas, and endocrine glands

Functions of the endocrine system

  • Regulates body body temperature
  • Regulates metabolism
  • Regulates development and reproduction
  • maintains homeostasis
  • Regulates all other systems

Pituitary Gland

Regulates other glands and produces growth hormones.

Hypothalamus

Cordinates the endocrine and nervous systems.

Pineal gland

Secretes the hormone melatonin which regulates the sleep cycle.

Thyroid gland

Regulates the bodies metabolic rate, controls the production of proteins.

Parathyroid gland

Regulates the calcium metabolism and creates parathyroid hormone.

Pancreas

Creates insulin and glucagon that raises or lowers glucose levels.

Adrenal glAnds

Regulates responses to stress and control mineral balance in blood.

ovaries and testEs

Regulates the hormones needed for reproduction.

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM USEs

HORMONES FROM THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

The digestive proceses use hormones

LIKE GASTRIN AND SECRETIN FROM THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

medical conditions

  • Gigantism
  • Dwarfism
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Appendicitis
  • Peptic ulcer

Dwarfism

Dwarfism is caused by lack of growth hormone from the pituitary gland.

GIGANTISM

Gigantism is caused by too much growth hormones to the pituitary gland.

These systems are related because:

  • The digestive system provides the energy while the endocrine uses/regulates
