HTML Basics

It is important to understand the basics of HTML if you plan to work on or create web pages. Even if you do not become an expert at HTML, having a basic understanding of the coding language can be beneficial when working online.

HTML

HyperText Markup Language
HTML stands for HyperText Markup Langage. It is a code that "marks up" the content of a web page with tags in order to allow the web browser to read and display it.

All HTML tags have angle brackets around the tag name. Each tag name means something different to the web browser and can be used to distinguish the different parts of a webpage.

Opening Tags

When you open an html tag, you are telling the web browser that everything after the tag is a certain type of content, until you close the tag.

To open a tag, you use angle brackets surrounding the tag name. For example, using the tag will tell the web browser that everything after the tag will be HTML code until the tag is closed.

Closing Tags

When you close a tag in HTML, you are letting the web browser know that you are no longer applying the tag to any future text.

To close a tag, you use angle brackets around the tag name with a forward slash right in front of the tag name. For example, using the tag will let the web browser know that anything after that closing tag is no longer in HTML code.
