SYMPTOMS

  • Genital Warts on the anus, scrotum, groin, thigh, or penis
  • Developing Cancer (Oropharynegeal Cancer)
  • Flat Warts/Plantar Warts
  • Anogenital Warts
  • Cervical Cancer

SYMPTOMS

  • In many cases HPV produces no symptoms
  • Genital warts in the vulva
  • Genital warts in or around the vagina
  • Genital warts on the cervix

HOW IT IS TRANSMITTED

  • Through contact with infected genital skin or bodily fluids
  • Through intercourse
  • Through contact with infected mucous membranes
  • Through oral sex

HOW IT IS TREATED

  • There is no treatment for the virus itself
  • There is treatments for the problems it causes though
  • Like cryosurgery, electrocautery, and laser therapy
  • Prescription cream
  • Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP)

HOW IT IS TREATED

  • Freezing off the warts
  • Using a special wire loop to remove the warts
  • Burning off the warts with an electrical current
  • Using an intense light to destroy the warts
  • Applying medicated cream directly to the warts

  • Alphapapillomavirus
  • Betapapillomavirus
  • Gammapapillomavirus
  • Mupapillomavirus
  • Nupapillomavirus

  • Part of the papillomavirus family
  • More than 30 to 40 types of HPV are transmitted
  • Known to cause around 70% of cervical cancer cases
  • 3,900 deaths in the U.S. in 2008
  • 11,000 cases in the U.S. in 2008

  • Substantially worldwide virus
  • Over 170 HPV types have been identified
  • Worldwide in 2001 an estimated 561,000 new cancer cases
  • About a dozen HPV types are called "high-risk" because it leads to cancer
  • As well as anal cancer, vulva cancer, vagnial cancer, and penile cancer
