Five tips for getting the most out of your proofreading pass.

1. Read the paper out loud, slowly.

Or, have someone read it to you. Pay attention.

2. Keep a checklist of errors you tend to make.

Do a proofreading pass for each error. 

3. Check titles and headings.

Look for typos, matching, and structure.

4. Cross-check citations.

Make sure each in-text citation matches a bibliographic citation.

5. Update the file name.

Change the date or add "final" to avoid version confusion.
