How to Choose the Right Dog Harness: Top Tips

Published on Dec 24, 2022

You have no idea how often we have heard tales of individuals regretting their decisions after purchasing dog harnesses from department shops or grabbing the first harness that strikes their attention on a shelf or website.

There are several types of dog accessories. This is especially true with dog walking equipment. Our puppies spend a lot of time outside, and the improper gear may make an outdoor activity that should be enjoyable for both the dog and their person into an uncomfortable one.

We are aware that selecting the ideal dog harness may be challenging, whether you are searching for your first puppy or just something new. To make the procedure simpler, we produced this tutorial in response to this need.

How to choose a dog harness and what to watch out for

Now that we know why using a harness makes sense, it's time to examine what makes some of them superior to others.

Strap placement

Although harnesses are a more secure alternative to collars, some designs may carry additional concerns. A dog's natural walk may be hampered if straps are worn over the shoulders, as is typical of many no-pull harnesses. This limitation of mobility has the potential to cause shoulder discomfort, inflammation, and possibly arthritis over time.

In light of this, it's crucial to take into account harnesses made to prevent your dog's shoulders from being constrained. Our reversible harnesses are designed to minimize pressure on the neck and shoulders, as you'll notice.

Where the leash clip is

Front-facing leash clips may aid in drawing a dog's focus back to its owner, although the posture can be very unpleasant. The dog harnesses include a leash clip on the back, in the area between the shoulder blades, offering a different option that both humans and dogs often find more comfortable.

Choosing the proper size

Selecting the proper dog harness size may be challenging, particularly if there are only a few sizes available and their measurements overlap. If you buy too large, your dog may be able to escape. The harness may injure them if you get it too small.

Each reversible dog harness comes in up to seven sizes, and we sell additional waist straps to keep your pooch comfortable as they grow. Choose a style you prefer, stick to our simple size instructions, and you can feel good about your decision!

Choose the appropriate material

Please allow us to reiterate our opening statement: not all dog accessories are made equal. While durable and sometimes less expensive, dog harnesses made of fabrics like polyester and nylon are more prone to chafe and irritate your dog's skin.

Neoprene, a thin, rubber-like material used to manufacture our harnesses at Pawfect Pals, prevents rubbing and keeps moisture off the skin. Our puppies don't accept too much good!

With all the knowledge you need at your disposal, why not put it to use by browsing our selection of reversible dog harnesses?
