HOW CAN OUTWARD APPEARANCES BE DECEIVING?

PSYCHOLOGICAL POINT OF VIEW

A perception one may have can lead to a deception of outward appearances. Each persons perceptions come from an experience, knowledge, or their past performance.People have different perceptions based on their past experiences and knowledge of the subject. Therefore because of each persons own perception they can see things differently when they are looking at identical objects.

LITERARY PERSEPECTIVE

There are many different literary works that show deception in outward appearances. In the play, The Comedy of Errors, everyone is judging others on who they think they are based on an outward appearance. No one takes really any time to get to know and understand the person on a deeper level. So their misinterpretation of outward appearances causes the main characters to be involved in a catastrophe of errors.

SOCIAL PERSPECTIVE

Society places to much value on appearances. So many things in our society are influenced by outward appearances. Research has shown pretty people get more job offers, raises, and opportunities. Appearances can be deceptive and physical attractiveness doesn't reflect on a persons true ability or talents.

  • People judge others by outward appearances but the Lord looks at the heart. (1Samuel 16:7b)
It's easy for people to judge others on outward appearances instead of actually getting to know the person deeper and not just on a superficial level. Even the Bible tells us not to judge a person by what we see Christ warns us "Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment." (John 7:24). To find truth a person must look beyond outward appearances.
