PRESENTATION OUTLINE

HORSE COGNITION

BY WHITLEY SINK

Horses evolved from dog size relatives about 55 thousand years ago.

Their brains did not change much from the brain of the dog sized relative until modern day horses. However, the modern day horse brain is not nearly as complex as the human brain.

Horses once had lots of predators. However over time they have dwindled.
The horses still have the hard-wired flight or fight response that came from having so many predators.

As cool as it would be for your horse to talk like Mister Ed, horses communicate through body language.

HORSES TRAINING

  • Many people think round pin horse training is nice to the horse, it's not
  • These methods scare the horse into using its fight or flight response
  • Native Americans use humane methods for horse training
  • The Indians used trust to become the leader of the herd
  • The round pin method uses fear to become the leader of the herd
