  • The Hopi are also known as Pueblos, they are named this because the were the first Native Americans the Spanish conquistadors encountered.
  • The original location of the Hopi is NE Arizona, they also lived in Canyon De Chelle
  • The Hopi had very different hunting techniques than normal Native Americans, the Hopi hunted rabbits with boomerangs.
  • After colonization the Hopi apparel changed immensely, they started wearing robes instead of the simple loincloth they wore previous to the colonization.
  • The Hopi burial rituals were very different to our culture, the deceased would be buried in a sitting position with food and drink wearing wedding robes for the women or a deerskin robe for the men.
  • The Hopi travelled on foot, until introduction to horses from colonization.
  • Hopi population declined during colonization, the Hopi died from the diaseases the English and Spanish brought from Europe.
  • Hopi used many different weapons, including boomerangs, bows, clubs, spears, etc.
  • The Hopi were known for their intricate jewellry, and basket weaving.
  • The Hopi women and elders watched over the village and children, while the men hunted and gathere vegetables and fruits.
  • When a child is born he or she will be kept in a dark room, for the first 10 days.
  • When naming a child after the tenth day of birth, they will be taken into the sun and the name will be decided upon by the elders and parents of the tribe.
  • The children will have a coming of age ceremony, when they turn 13.
  • Hopi gods includes, the Earth Mother, Sky Father, the Sun, the Moon, Kachinas, Masaw.
  • Kachinas were the guardians of the Earth Mother, they thought these were their ancestors.

Housing

  • The Hopi had a village of houses grouped together
  • The houses were made of clay and stone
  • Hopi had just one home, which they lived in year round

  • The Hopi ate many different things, such as antelope and deer.
  • They also grew vegetables and fruits.

Clothing

  • The Hopi men wore buckskin loincloth
  • The women wore cloth robes which they made
  • After colonization the Hopi men started wearing buckskin robes

General Lives

  • The Hopi women would usually watch over the village and care for the children.
  • The Hopi men would go hunting for antelope or deer, they would also gather cactus plants to eat
