STORYLINE

  • Faith doesn't want Goodman Brown to go into the woods.
  • She has been having nightmares.
  • She doesn't want to feel bereavement.

STORYLINE

  • Goodman meets "The Man in the Woods".
  • He tries to entice him to sin.

"THE MAN IN THE WOODS"

  • A man who accompanies Goodman in the woods.
  • Represents the devil or Satan.

SERPENT STAFF

  • Walking stick with a carving on it.
  • Symbolizes temptation.

STORYLINE

  • The Man offers Goodman a serpentine staff, But he refuses.
  • They see people from the church.
  • Goody Cloyse reveals herself to be a witch.

GOODY CLOUSE

  • One of the church folk he sees.
  • Represents irony of the Puritans.

STORYLINE

  • Goodman takes the staff and the man disappears.
  • When he sits down he hears the familiar voice of Deacon Gooken.
  • Brown then sees a pink ribbon he knows to be Faith's.

PINK RIBBON

  • What Faith wears in her hair.
  • Symbolizes that faith is pure but not totally pure.

STORYLINE

  • Goodman teleports to the ceremony.
  • The church folk push Goodman closer to the center.
  • In the center stood faith.

THE WOODS

  • Where he goes on the journey.
  • Represents the sinful path he is on.

STORYLINE

  • Everything disappears and he wakes up alone.
  • He returns to Salem village feeling ostracized.
  • Goodman believes everyone in the town is evil.
