Faculty/Librarian Collaboration

“It is imperative that librarians collaborate with and support faculty on a college campus to reinforce overall academic success.” (Massis 90)

“The need for librarian-faculty cooperation and the challenge of doing so has long been a part of professional literature” (Meulemans and Carr 80).

“A well-documented concern in the field of library instruction – or as it [is] more commonly known in the 21st century, Information Literacy (IL) – is a lack of faculty interest and cooperation with librarians in course-based instruction” (Gardner and White-Farnham 235).

"Nearly all librarians think communication between faculty and librarians could be better (98%), but less than half of faculty (45%) feel the same need” (Schwartz 39)."

Reasons for Disconnect

Reasons

  • Campus culture - concerns about academic freedom
  • Disciplinary assumptions about what constitutes research
  • Awareness of what librarians do and how they can help
  • MLS Degree and Faculty Status for librarians
